I want to learn how to sail!

G’day!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, I’m the first to admit I’m not a great blogger. I’ve never been into travel journals but thought this would be something different and more my thing. I appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to visit and read my blog so far though, I promise to get some new content up soon.

Anyhow, I wanted to post to inform the world about my upcoming plans. Now that my Vietnamese adventure is over (blogs coming soon ), I’m back to the land of koalas touring up and down the east coast of Queensland once again. Can you believe it’s been 1 year since I started guiding Loka? Crazy right, one year already! Granted I have been away for 5 of those months(New Zealand, Indonesia & Vietnam). I’ve loved every day of it and am so grateful for all the opportunities and fun it’s given me. Although, a change is in the air.

So here I am, back in Australia and back to guiding and it’s already April! So.. what’s next for this adventure-seeker, ocean-loving Aussie girl who can’t sit still. It’s true, I’ve got commitment issues and can’t commit to one place for very long.

So, exactly 2 months from today (June 11) I will be flying up and away back to Europe to follow my passion for the sea and sailing. I managed to scoop up a super cheap flight from the Gold Coast to Athens, Greece for only $380. If that’s not a bargain I don’t know what is. Big thanks to I Know the Pilot for this great deal! I’ll be in Greece for just a few days before flying into Split, Croatia.

I’ve decided to follow my heart and undying love for the sea and learn how to sail by enrolling in an RYA sailing course. I’ve grown up on boats and would happily live and work on a yacht but have never really learnt the skills and ropes of the boats. Instead of jumping back on a boozy cruisey boat that Croatia is famous for, don’t get me wrong these are great fun but I’m going to dedicate my time at sea to learn, increase my knowledge of boats and get some experience at sea instead of just get drunk and party.

‘Why Croatia’ i can hear you thinking. Well.. sailing is a big thing there, I have close friends who I miss who will be living there during the time I’m there which I’ll be able to stay with, it’s the country my father’s family is from, it’s beautiful and also incredibly fun, plus I got super cheap flights direct from my home town. It all lines up and just feels right.

Plans after the course are a little bit up and air at this stage but I’ve got a few things lined up. Some time in Croatia followed by Greece is on the cards at this stage. I’m not sure how long I’ll be gone but I’ll see how it all goes once. I’ve also got a month’s job lined up in Split once my course is complete, altogether I’ll be in Croatia for nearly two months. From there I’ll head down to Greece to visit a friend who lived on a yacht and put my new skills to use. I’m so excited to learn and spend time on the sea embracing my inner mermaid and Moana Disney princess. When will I come back? Who knows, after the summer most probably. We will see where the wind takes me.

This isn’t a totally new idea, I’ve been sitting on it for a while. I tend to do this, I’ll come up with a cool idea like booking a one-way ticket and just go with the flow from there. I’ll think about it for a few months, check flights, things to do, working opportunities, visas etc and then bam, one day it feels right and I book something. My life may be a little crazy at the moment but all the craziness feels just right.

Croatia is also the country my father is from so I always have this pull that keeps bringing me back even though I have no contact with any distant family who may be there. I love learning the culture, and language and being in the country that my father’s side of the family is from. I always want to learn more about the country, the people, and the language. In a way, I feel like I’m moving there for a short amount of time. I’ve already explored a lot of Croatia but this time I’ll be based in one place for an extended time, nearly 2 months. This trip will be a learning and a big experience for me in many ways.

Who knows what opportunities will come in the future from this but I am sure what’s meant to be will happen. All I know is I’m following something i love and want to learn more about. Leaving the world back here in Aus once again excites me.

They say the world is your oyster and I’ve got this one-way ticket that makes my heart happy. See ya in Australia once again, hello to the seas of the Mediterranean and summer on the water.

I promise to blog and share my journey with those who wish to read it. 2 months from today, a new adventure begins!

Will you be in Croatia, or Greece this summer of 2018? Reach out to me and maybe our paths will cross.

That’s all I’ve got planned for now, I’ll update you on any new deets and wild ideas I’ve got on my mind.

Safe travels!

Jess
